Firestopping
Firestopping & Service Penetration Sealing
Firestopping is a Vital Component of Providing Structural Fire Protection and Fire Safety Within a Building
The purpose of firestopping is to contain or slow the spread of fires by utilising fire resistant walls, floors and doors. Systems must comply with associated regulations to meet compliance with expected levels of building and fire safety codes.
To maintain this level of compliance a good fire protection strategy is vital, this needs to include the evaluation of anticipated risk.
Due to the operation of Data Centres and Enterprise IT spaces it is often a requirement to penetrate fire-rated walls and floors to distribute services and connectivity. These openings increase the risk of fires or smoke spreading if left unresolved.
The risk of fires in Data Centres comes down to four main items – large power loads, potential for electrical fires, vulnerable infrastructure and ventilation. Older Data Centres have an increased risk of fires spreading due to the use of older cables that do not meet the latest required regulations, making firestopping between zones more important. Our firestopping service is conducted via Critical Facilities Solutions (CFS), part of the EDP group.
